Troy A. Brenes, Esq., Managing Partner
Troy Brenes is a trial attorney who focuses his practice on catastrophic personal injury cases and complex pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. In recent years, Mr. Brenes has represented and obtained recoveries on behalf of hundreds of patients that have been injured by defective medical devices, including hernia mesh devices, defibrillator lead wires, hip replacement systems, and inferior vena cava filters.
Mr. Brenes has served as a member of the Plaintiffs’ Leadership Steering Committee in the Bard and Cook Inferior Vena Cava Filter Multidistrict litigations. Mr. Brenes is also helping to coordinate and lead litigation efforts relating to the Cordis TrapEase and OptEase inferior vena cava filters. Currently, Mr. Brenes is also helping to lead and coordinate litigation efforts regarding various hernia mesh products. He also established and chairs a consortium of law firms, via the American Association for Justice, to coordinate litigation efforts nationally amongst plaintiff firms regarding inferior vena cava filter cases.
Mr. Brenes has been invited as guest speaker at multiple educational conferences for trial attorneys to share his knowledge and expertise in areas of science, causation, expert development, and regulatory matters relating to the litigation of medical device cases. He is co-lead trial counsel in numerous IVC filter cases pending around the country, and recently won a settlement from IVC filter manufacturer C.R. Bard, Inc. for a Nevada Plaintiff after an 11 day jury trial. Mr. Brenes is often brought in as co-lead trial counsel by other law firms once a case appears likely to proceed to trial.
Mr. Brenes earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 2006. While obtaining his law school education, Mr. Brenes externed for the Cancer Legal Resource Center, providing free help to those with cancer-related legal issues. Mr. Brenes previously worked with a national multi-district litigation law firm in Newport Beach, California. While there, he worked on a variety of high-profile, complex-litigation projects including pharmaceutical and medical-device litigations across the country.
Mr. Brenes is a member of the American Association for Justice, Trial Lawyers for Public Justice (TLPJ), American Bar Association (ABA), and the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association (OCTLA). In 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Mr. Brenes was listed by Thomas Reuters’ Super Lawyers publication as a Super Lawyers Rising Star.
Maya G. Brenes, Esq., Partner
Maya G. Brenes is an experienced trial attorney who has spent the last decade litigating on behalf of consumers and employees to hold businesses accountable when they fail to comply with minimum community standards, be it employment rights or standards of care in personal injury cases. Ms. Brenes also holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from one of the most prestigious engineering programs in the country, Stanford University. This background makes Ms. Brenes well situated to litigate complex medical device and pharmaceutical cases, which often turn on complex engineering principles.
Ms. Brenes has always had a strong passion for civil and consumer rights. While earning her Juris Doctorate at Loyola Law School, she served as a law clerk for the Honorable Teresa Sanchez-Gordon of the Superior Court of Los Angeles, where she evaluated civil claims for personal injury, malpractice, and employment rights. In law school, Ms. Brenes was a member of the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review, studied abroad at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy where she took courses in international and comparative law, and served as President of a student organization dedicated to advancing the representation of minorities in the legal field. Further, during her time as a law student, Ms. Brenes coordinated the Young Lawyers Mentoring Program, which has been honored as the best law school public interest program in the United States.
She is a member of the Orange County Bar Association, the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association (OCTLA), the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association, and the Latina Lawyers Bar Association. Ms. Brenes is trained in conflict resolution under the California Dispute Resolution Programs Act.
Ms. Brenes is a Member of the California State Bar and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of California.
Carlos Sanchez, Associate Attorney
Carlos Sanchez is currently an associate attorney with Brenes Law Group, P.C. Mr. Sanchez is dedicated to obtaining civil justice by providing quality legal services to protect and empower the public.
Prior to joining Brenes Law Group, P.C., Mr. Sanchez represented applicants in the worker’s compensation administrative legal system. This required Mr. Sanchez to manage a very heavy caseload, review extensive medical records, and negotiate favorable settlements. Shortly after graduating law school, Mr. Sanchez was a fellow at a non-profit legal organization, where he researched complex legal issues and interviewed potential clients with diverse life experiences.
Mr. Sanchez attended the University of California, Irvine School of Law. During law school, Mr. Sanchez participated in a clinical course, where he briefed a case resulting in a published Federal District court opinion. Mr. Sanchez also assisted victims of torture obtain legal status in the United States while attending law school.
Mr. Sanchez earned his B.A. in Legal Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. While attending undergraduate studies, Mr. Sanchez also worked in local government at the City and County of San Francisco. Following graduation, Mr. Sanchez worked as a legal assistant for a plaintiff’s class action firm specializing in food label litigation.
Mr. Sanchez is a member of the California State Bar. He is an avid cyclist, native Southern Californian, and enjoys spending time with his significant other.
Kelseigh Jones, Law Clerk
Kelseigh Jones is currently a law clerk at Brenes Law Group, P.C. Ms. Jones has a diverse background in immigration law, labor law and class action suits, personal injury, and family law. Ms. Jones has experience working on cases from beginning to end, ensuring that the client’s best interest is at the forefront every step of the way. While earning a Juris Doctorate degree at Whittier Law School her passion for learning and belief in our legal system has only solidified with knowledge and experience.
Before honing in on her passion, Ms. Jones completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Davis, after entering mid-freshman year as a result of Hurricane Katrina displacement. Originally a freshman at Loyola University of New Orleans, her interest in studying law began after a tour of Loyola’s law school during her freshman summer in New Orleans.
Shortly after earning her Bachelor’s Degree in History, Ms. Jones went on to study at the University of Southern California, Rossier School of Education. Due her to background in coaching secondary athletics and her passion for history, Ms. Jones pursued a Master’s degree at USC before redirecting her focus to law.
As a result of her diverse background, Ms. Jones has developed the skills necessary to work effectively and diligently while under pressure. In addition, she looks forward to helping those around her, providing information and insight where she is knowledgeable, and confidently approaching each and every task with a viable solution in mind
Justin Sabol, Paralegal
Justin Sabol is currently a paralegal at Brenes Law Group, P.C. Mr. Sabol is a solutions-focused, highly motivated paralegal with a comprehensive background in litigation and case management in mass tort, product liability, and personal injury. He has experience in multiple federal and state jurisdictions while exclusively managing multiple cases in varied jurisdictions. Mr. Sabol has the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects while workingunder pressure in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment. Not only has Mr. Sabol organized and analyzed case-specific materials, but he has also performed both legal and non-legal research whenever necessary. He has extensive experience in interviewing witnesses and gathering information from a wide variety of public an private sources.
Prior to joining Brenes Law Group, P.C., Mr. Sabol worked as a legal assistant at a national multi-district litigation law firm in Newport Beach, California. He worked extensively in the area of product liability, although he was also involved in a variety of other projects and cases as well. Specifically, Mr. Sabol worked closely with over 400 clients in a Product Liability Multi-District Litigation, which is still currently pending in the South Carolina District Court. He was in charge of many aspects of this complex litigation, including initial case evaluations, communicating with clients, obtaining and conducting in-depth reviews of medical records, maintaining and organizing client files, and drafting letters and other case-specific documentation when needed.
Before becoming a skilled paralegal, Mr. Sabol attended Temple University focusing on computer engineering. This background in computer engineering equipped Mr. Sabol with vast knowledge of the technological world, which he has applied to his legal career. Mr. Sabol is fluent in all aspects of Microsoft Office, Adobe, word processing, and several case management software, such as Trial Works. Furthermore, Mr. Sabol is currently enrolled in classes to become a trained trial technician, which will help him to assist with all electronic aspects of trials more proficiently.
Mr. Sabol is a member of the Orange County Paralegal Association (OCPA), the American Bar Association (ABA) and the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations (CAPA). In his free time, Mr. Sabol enjoys playing old school video games, billiards, and spending time with his fiancee and their dog Buddy.
James Maciel, Paralegal
James Maciel has a diverse background in insurance defense with an emphasis in wrongful death, premises liability, auto-accident, slip and falls, products liability, and family law. Mr. Maciel has experience working a case from inception to the end, ensuring that the client’s best interest is at the forefront every step of the way. While earning a Juris Doctor degree at Trinity Law School he was a Board Member of the Christian Legal Society, a member of the Trial Advocacy Team, and is certified in Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Before earning his Juris Doctor degree, Mr. Maciel earned a Master of Arts degree in the field of Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Mr. Maciel also earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Biola University in Organizational Leadership. Studying at Biola University has helped Mr. Maciel learn to serve others and in church with a passion and in his leisure he stays abreast on his Christian Apologetics with readings in the field.
Mr. Maciel earned his Associate Science Degree in Paralegal Studies from Rio Hondo Community College and interned with the most prestigious divorce lawyer in California, while working for a Political Law Firm on many California Politician Committees and Campaigns.
Mr. Maciel is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in special forces with a reconnaissance team. He is a native Southern Californian but spent the last three years in North Dallas, Texas working for an insurance defense firm. Mr. Maciel is married and enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters and their dog and they are at the amusement parks if he is not watching sports.

Yvette Huseman is a receptionist at Brenes Law Group, P.C., where she enjoys her significant contact and interaction with our clients. Ms. Huseman has over ten years of experience as a receptionist and uses her skills daily to deliver excellence to our clients.
Ms. Huseman has lived in Huntington Beach for most of her life and has recently moved to San Clemente, California. Ms. Huseman enjoys spending her free time at the beach, camping, and exploring Mexico with her husband.
